What are admissions requirements?

Quick Answer:

Freshman Admissions
Kent State University's freshman admission policy differentiates among students with varying degrees of preparation for college studies. The students most likely to be admitted and succeed at the Kent Campus are those who have graduated with at least 16 units of the recommended college preparatory curriculum in high school, who have achieved a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), and whose composite ACT score is 21 or better (980 combined critical reading + math SAT score).

College Preparatory Curriculum
The full college preparatory curriculum as recommended by the Ohio State Board of Education consists of the following:

  • 4 units of English (emphasis on composition)
  • 3 units of mathematics (Algebra I, II, Geometry)
  • 3 units of science
  • 3 units of social studies
  • 2 units of foreign language
  • 1 unit of the arts

Students who do not meet the above criteria but who have graduated with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.2 (on a 4.0 scale) at a chartered or accredited high school or who have passed the College Level General Educational Development Examination (GED) may be considered for admission. High school course selection, class rank, recommendations, and ACT/SAT scores will be closely examined in making admissions decisions about such students.

Kent State University is interested in attracting students from underrepresented groups, those with special talents, and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

Deferred Admission
Kent State may defer the admission of students who do not meet the admission criteria for the Kent Campus. Deferred applicants may begin their college coursework at one of the seven Regional Campuses of Kent State University. The Admissions Office at the Kent Campus will forward application materials to the appropriate Regional Campus at the student's request.

Transfer Admissions
Transfer applicants who have attended any educational institution after graduating from high school must apply as a transfer student. Generally, a transfer applicant who has taken 12 or more semester hours with a college cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale may be admitted. An applicant who has taken fewer than 12 semester hours will be evaluated on both collegiate and high school records. Transfer applications are processed on a rolling basis. However, early application helps to ensure early consideration for class registration, residence hall preferences and financial aid. Therefore, the best time to apply is at least six months prior to the term you wish to enter Kent State.

Adult Students
Kent State University welcomes applications from adult students. Students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to contact the Office of Adult Services to discuss admissions requirements and enrollment procedures.

  • Any student whose lifestyle does not fit the usual 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule of full-time credit coursework while living on campus or:
  • Undergraduate students 21 years of age and older at the time of first college enrollment
  • Any student regardless of age, who wishes to enter Kent State University as an evening and/or weekend undergraduate student
  • Nontraditional current or prospective students, whose primary life roles/responsibilities exist separate from the university and take precedence over the role of student

International Students
TOEFL Scores
As a part of the application process, Kent State University requires international students to demonstrate proficiency in English. The most common way to do this is to submit a TOEFL score. We require a minimum of 525 (197 computer based) as a TOEFL score to be admitted to Kent State University. Some applicants are exempt from the English proficiency requirement because of the country of origin. If you are a student from a following country you exempt. Those countries are: Australia; Canada except Quebec; Commonwealth Caribbean, including Belize; Liberia; New Zealand; United Kingdom; and the United States, except Puerto Rico. Applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents but who have been educated outside the countries listed above are also required to submit evidence of their English ability. Applicants who are exempt from English proficiency have no standardized test required of them for admission. It is possible for students to receive credit towards the foreign language requirement of a program at Kent State University. This will be certified by Kent State once the student is enrolled at Kent State University.

International GPA
Is my international grade point average (GPA) high enough for admission? Since educational systems vary so much from country to country, an evaluation of your academic credentials by Kent State will be needed to determine this. Kent State University utilizes a 4.0 grading scale system; your grades will be converted to this scale to determine if you are admissible.
